SYMBOLISM
Shield.  Dark blue and gold are the colors traditionally used by the U.S. Navy.  Gold is also emblematic of excellence and honor.  The blue, yellow and red suggest the ribbon colors of the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, which was awarded to Forrest Rednour for his heroic acts of water rescue after the sinking of S.S. Dorchester.  The black pale signifies strength and courage, and further alludes to the dark and icy waters of the North Atlantic, where Rednour, along with other retrievers, swam in to save floating survivors.  The golden ladder refers to Jacobs ladder, a nautical symbol of water rescue and assistance.  The six stars denote the three vessels in Task Unit 24.8.3 that escorted the three convoy vessels S.S. Dorchester, freighter S.S. Lutz, and freighter S.S. Biscaya.  Rednour was assigned to the USCGC Escanaba, one of the escort vessels that participated in the rescue of 133 men.

Crest.  The life buoy with the inscriptions WPG and 77 pays tribute to the USCGC Escanaba.  The night sky within the life buoy alludes to the early morning hours Dorchester was attacked.  The Angels Gate Lighthouse represents the units homeport in San Pedro, California.  Its light illuminates through the night as a guide and beacon of hope.
In heraldry, the wreath (or torse) is a critical element of a coat of arms.  It depicts the twisted band composed of two strips of gold or silver lace and silk by which the crest is joined to the knights helmet.  The torse is always composed of six twists of material displayed alternately.  The first twist is the primary metal color (gold or silver) and the second twist represents the primary color of arms in the shield.

Supporters.  The crossed oars symbolize teamwork and cooperation.  They further allude to Forrest Rednours participation in water rescue after the sinking of the S.S. Dorchester.

Motto.  The phrase COURAGE IN THE FACE OF PERIL is the motto.

Seal.  The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a white disc within a Dark Blue designation band, edged with a Gold rope border and bearing the name USCGC FORREST REDNOUR at the top and WPC 1129 at the base.
